When is the best time of year to prune trees?

Pruning is valuable to the stewardship of our lands in order to encourage healthy ecosystems.

The awakening time of spring is optimal for removing overlapping and over weighted branches and deadwood. This manages air flow and drastically reduces the risk of branches cracking, falling, and/or affecting the structural integrity of the tree.

The spring environment and temperatures protect the tree from damage that can happen in extreme conditions of summer and winter. When trees are pruned in the summer and fall months, they are more susceptible to infections and pests.

Additionally, it is simply easier to see overlapping branches and deadwood when there are no leaves on the tree. In regards to fruit and nut trees, when properly pruned at the right time of year, growth patterns can be selected and directed so that you will see much larger and healthier yields.
