Pest Management and tree Disease Specialist

Common WNC Tree Pests

In Western North Carolina, the two widely known pests killing trees in our backyards and forests are the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid which affects the eastern hemlock and the emerald ash borer which affects all native ash species.

The eastern hemlock is a keystone species, which means that it plays an intricate and complex role in the ecosystems it occupies. With its decline, forest ecosystems as a whole are suffering.

Gravity Works Tree Service uses proven treatments and methods to identify insects that harm trees and remediate the affected trees.

Tree Disease Control

During a tree removal project involving a large poplar, signs of distress prompted a closer inspection, revealing the presence of this cute little snake and more importantly Armillaria Mellea, commonly known as “Honey Mushroom.” This fungus poses a significant threat to trees by decaying the root system, and in this case, recent construction activities had severed the tree's roots, leaving it susceptible to the pathogen.

In urban forestry, human activities such as construction and soil compaction contribute to tree decline. Raising awareness and thoughtful planning are crucial to mitigating these issues.
